New Chair leads the way for Hospitality in Sheffield

Ian Slater, current General Manager of the Park Inn, Sheffield has taken over the role as Chair for the city’s hotel and venue association Hospitality Sheffield. Taking over the position from former Chair, Paul Columbus, Ian plans to continue Paul’s good work and take the group forward in its mission to drive excellence in accommodation, entertainment and conferencing.

Hospitality Sheffield, now boasting 33 members including every major hotel and venue in the city, represents the interests of the hospitality sector in Sheffield and the surrounding area. Its aim is to enhance the reputation of the hospitality sector within the region and to work with partners to help put Sheffield on the national and international tourism map.

New Chair, Ian Slater, commented:
“As the newly elected Chairman of Hospitality Sheffield I am delighted to be taking over the reins from Paul Columbus. Paul has done a fantastic job as Chairman and has played a key role in the rejuvenation of the organisation.”

Despite the challenges within the global economy, Hospitality Sheffield is going from strength to strength and is benefiting hugely from the changes to tourism in the region. The old Yorkshire Tourist Board has been rebranded as Welcome to Yorkshire and the recognition of “City Life“as a major sector of the visitor economy is key to Sheffield. Yorkshire South, the destination partnership for Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley, has won “Best UK Destination “ for the last two years at International Confex and is now positioned as one of the leading tourist and conference bureaus  in the country. These changes to how the region’s tourism is managed mean real opportunities for Sheffield to grow its visitor economy.

Ian continued:
“In my role as Chairman I will work closely with the board and all its members to ensure their combined knowledge and experience is given a voice and that their interests and the interests of the city are represented. Hospitality Sheffield is here to promote all that is good about Sheffield and the industry. We are here to show that Sheffield is not about the cheapest offer - it’s about being the best offer.”

Hospitality Sheffield will recognise its employees later this year with the annual Hospitality Awards. Now in their 6th year, the awards focus on the hard work and talent of people working in the industry. This year’s awards will take place at Sheffield City Hall on September 24th and are now the key event in the city’s hospitality calendar.
