SIV Conferencing and Events is switched on when it comes to saving energy as they received a glowing report following a government audit of the environmental impact and energy efficiency of its event venues.
As part of the process, venues are examined and awarded Display Energy Certificates (DECs) on a scale of A to G, where A is flawless for energy management systems and employment of the latest energy saving technologies.
Ponds Forge - Sheffield proudly achieved a B rating in spite of diverse and intensive energy demands, as did the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield.
City Hall - Sheffield, constructed before energy efficiency was a pressing concern in 1932 also achieved a B rating.
Martyn Clark, energy manager for Sheffield International Venues, said: "The DECs stand as a testament to SIV’s commitment to civic responsibility and act as an endorsement of the effort SIV has made in optimizing our energy efficiency.
"In recent months, we have embarked on a rigorous programme in order to minimise our carbon footprint on the city and lower operating costs to offer greater value for money for our members and customers."
A key part of this programme involved replacing all venue lighting with Ideal Lights LED lamps, saving £16,000 per year in electricity costs as well as reducing 98 tonnes in carbon emissions.
Martyn added: "The lamps have delivered immediate savings in electricity consumption of up to 70 per cent, while generating measured light levels that were equal to and often brighter than the lamps they replaced.
"The low power has also produced other benefits such as reducing the burden on the electrical infrastructure of the sites. LED lamps emit minimal heat, so power consumption of air-conditioning systems will be significantly reduced. They also have a guaranteed five year lifespan, which means they don't need replacing as often."
